50 minute video about the history of the Narragansett tribe of Native Americans from their own perspective. Covers the history of the tribe from colonial times through the present day. Contains interviews with tribal members, photographs of early tribal members, and paintings and drawings depicting early meetings between the Narragansetts and Europeans. Topics include: The Great Swamp Massacre, Narragansett perspectives on colonial meetings, detribalization, struggle to regain tribal lands, right of the Narragansetts to vote, August meetings (pow-wows) and why they were started, closing of the Narragansett schoolhouse and integration into public schools, Pan Indian Movement of the 1920's and renewing and regathering of the tribe, efforts to retribalize, August meetings in the 1950's and the introduction of visitors, demonstrations in the 1960's, RI Indian Claims Settlement Act, Federal recognition, integration into modern society, internal problems that divide the tribe, gaming controversy (large section on this at the end).
